"GAMER with the Out-of-core Computation"

Abstract. /GAMER/ is a parallelized GPU-accelerated Adaptive-MEsh-Refinement code, which adopts a novel approach in improving the performance of adaptive-mesh-refinement (AMR) astrophysical simulations by a large factor with the use of multiple graphic processing units (GPU). In this work, we further implement the out-of-core computation in GAMER, which utilizes the large storage space of multiple hard disks as the additional run-time memory and accordingly increases the total amount of memory by a factor of hundred, permitting an extremely large problem to be solved in a small-size PC cluster. The I/O bandwidth in a single node is improved up to 750 MB/s by distributing data in eight hard disks. Furthermore, the communication overhead associated with the data transfer between the hard disks and main memory is carefully reduced by overlapping it with the CPU/GPU computations.
