Naoki Yoshida (IMPU Tokyo):

"Simulating structure formation in the early universe"

Abstract. How and when did the first stars form, and how did they die ? I describe key physical processes of primordial star formation, from Big Bang ripples to a protostar. I then explain the growth of the protostar to main sequence, with an emphasis on protostellar feedback effects that ultimately set the stellar mass. To summarize briefly, the characteristic mass of the first stars is several tens of solar masses, in contrast to the often postulated extremely massive stars. Such ordinary massive primordial stars resolve a long-standing problem of Galactic chemical evolution.
