"Amplification of Magnetic Fields in Young Galaxies"

Zusammenfassung. During the formation of the first galaxies turbulence is generated by accretion flows and supernovae. The small-scale dynamo converts this turbulent kinetic energy into magnetic energy by randomly stretching and twisting the field lines. In the kinematic phase weak seed fields get amplified exponentially, while the growth rate is largest on small scales. Subsequently the magnetic energy is shifted towards larger scales in the non-linear dynamo phase until saturation occurs. In my talk I will present a theoretical description of the small-scale dynamo and show the expected evolution of the magnetic field in a young galaxy. Our calculations can help to understand, why strong magnetic fields of typically a few Micro-Gauss are observed in present-day galaxies.
