Pictures of me

View from the plane on my way to Paranal Observatory in Chile.

VLT - view from the plane on my way there (Residencia down hill).

4 Very Large Telescopes (VLT), Paranal, Atacama Desert, Chile - observing run in June 2010.

Welcoming 'front door view' of Residencia, my personal experience how Mars looks like:), Atacama Desert, Chile.

View from the platform.

Of an early evening atmosphere, the picture taken on the way to the telescopes.

View from a different angle.

And another one.

View from the platform - observing run in April 2013.

One more.

And one more

Sunset colors (without any enhancement).

One more picture.

And one more.

The picture taken after sunrise on the way downhill - morning lights bring a very different atmosphere.

Another picture this time taken during my flight back to Santiago.

Observatory

Telescopes before sunset (a bit distorted:) I will correct it later - at least I hope so)

4 Very Large Telescopes (VLT), Paranal, Atacama Desert, Chile - daytime.

Auxiliary Telescopes used for Interferometry, Paranal.

Vista, Paranal, Atacama Desert, Chile.

Residencia from outside with the telescopes in the distance.

You can see as the building is sunk into the ground and also turned off from the telescopes to avoid light pollution. The windows of Residencia are very small and in case one is using light in the the room after sunset, it is obligatory to use blinds.

This is the only place I did recognize in the James Bond movie 'Quantum of Solace'.

A bit of life in the middle of the desert. It is a little jungle and once more, it more reminds you life on Mars. Two tracks of water are daily brought to Paranal to maintain the needs of visitors. In showers are signs admonish not to waste water. The plants and the swimming pool brings quite some humidity to the place. People regularly swim after their observing nights.

One of the offices in Residencia - this one is mine:) for two weeks in March 2009.

Guest House in Santiago de Chile - a wonderful place - somehow unreal - very luxury and colonial with a beautiful garden, swimming pool and dining room with an handbell to announce guests are ready for a next course (feels wrong:)

Another picture of the Guest House garden - the place is incredibly neat.
