Low-Mass Early Planetary Atmospheres Workshop

This is the webpage for the Tübingen Winter-Workshop 2018 on the Formation of Low-Mass Early Planetary Atmospheres.


Exoplanet surveys have found low-mass, rocky (or icy) planets to be by number the dominant planetary type. A good fraction of these planets are inferred to have thick atmospheres composed of hydrogen and helium. These properties - the planet‘s mass and the atmosphere mass fraction - are thought to be regulated early on in its evolution, while it was still embedded in the circumstellar gaseous accretion disk.

For this reason it is important to understand the interaction of these young planetary embryos with their natal disk. Until recently, most research efforts have been directed to obtain the planet‘s dynamical properties such as the migration and multi-planet interaction. While an active field of research, other aspects of disk-planet interaction are at least as relevant. Key questions are:

  1. How efficient is the cooling and contraction of the early atmospheres?

  2. In how much is the thermodynamical evolution of these atmospheres regulated by its connection and the evolution of the disk?

  3. What is the fate of small particles (pebbles) when they enter these pre-planetary atmospheres?

  4. How do all of these effects depend on local disk conditions?

  5. What are the imprints of these processes on the observable characteristics?

The aim of the workshop is to stimulate future research efforts by fleshing out the most important open research questions like those above (but in more detail) and outlining the tools and methods needed to address those questions from a theoretical point of view. We anticipate that exchanging our results and views on these topics will initiate new investigations and collaborations.

The Workshop venue is in the same building C as our offices, and just one level below them (9th floor).
