Chromospheric and Coronal Physics, Magnetic and
Nonmagnetic Heating of the Outer Stellar Atmospheres

Practically all stars have chromospheres and coronae, that is, hot to very hot outer layers. These are responsible for the UV-, X-ray and radio emissions and are the origin and sometimes cause for the stellar winds. In chromospheres the temperature rises from the stellar surface in outward direction to values of about 10 000 K while in coronae the temperatures reach values of the order of millions of K.
The fundamental question is how these layers are heated to high temperatures. Since for most stars their nearby neighbors are far away the heating must originate from the star itself. It is the main goal of our research to elucidate these heating mechanisms and to construct theoretical models for chromospheres and coronae.
