Christoph Federrath (ITA):

"The role of turbulence in star formation"

Zusammenfassung. Supersonic turbulent motions in molecular clouds cause gas compressions. Some of this gas can decouple from the ambient medium, if it is gravitationally bound. In these densest cores, star formation finally sets in through gravitational collapse. In this talk, I will present results of numerical simulations of driven and decaying turbulence with and without self-gravity. I will show that very different statistics of the density and mass distributions are obtained by varying the turbulence forcing from the typically adopted solenoidal (divergence-free) forcing to compressive (curl-free) turbulence forcing.
