"Astrophysical parameter inference from Gaia"

Zusammenfassung. After its launch next year, Gaia will obtain astrometry and optical spectrophotometry for essentially all sources in the sky down to a broad band magnitude limit of G=20, an expected yield of 10^9 stars, galaxies and quasars. Gaia marks a major step forward in the quantity and quality of accurate parallaxes (distance) and proper motions we will have for stars in our Galaxy, and therefore what we can learn about its formation and evolution (for example via chemo-dynamical modelling). A prerequisite of this is to classify the sources and to estimate the stellar astrophysical parameters, such as the chemical abundance and the line-of-sight interstellar extinction. I will outline how we plan to achieve this using, amongst other things, methods of Bayesian inference, and will give some idea of the expected performance and yield.
