     Discovered 2002 Jul. 29 by S. F. Hönig on NEAT images taken at Palomar.
     Named in honour of astrophysicist Werner M. Tscharnuter (b. 1945). During
the last 3 decades he made major contributions in the fields of star formation,
protoplanetary disks, stellar dynamics and Saturn's rings. Moreover, W. M.
Tscharnuter shares a strong interest in celestial mechanics, particularily the
evolution of the Koronis family, this minor planet probably belongs to.
