Magnetized large-scale AGN jets

Evolution of a magnetized AGN jet on large scales: Only the first 14 million years are included in the movie. The jet has a density contrast of 1:1000 (i.e. it is 1000 times lighter than the surrounding gas) and has a plasma beta of ~ 8.

Magnetic field structure in the jet: The magnetic field is initially helical, but becomes dominantly toroidal in the jet head, when the plasma is decelerated. The radial field components are compressed and shearing of the poloidal magnetic fields adds to this and considerably amplifies the field magnitude.
